Mendoza Governor Warns of Asymmetrical Economic Growth and Rising Social Tensions

The governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo, stated that the country's economic growth process will be asymmetrical and warned that social tensions could increase in the short term. During his participation in Argentina Week in New York, the official analyzed the financial and productive outlook, noting that while there are positive signs, sustaining the model depends on constant and coordinated management. «If we grow by four percent, some of those points are explained by Vaca Muerta, which is not in all provinces; another part is the humid pampa, which is also not in all», Cornejo detailed when describing the disparity in sectoral recovery. In this context, the governor was categorical about the immediate consequences of this scenario: «The economy and public sentiment will crack this year». The conflict in the Middle East is driving up oil prices and reopening the debate on inflation. Regarding capital flows, the Mendoza governor noted that market enthusiasm must translate into concrete decisions, a step that, in his view, is still in a maturation process. «I perceive there is enthusiasm, but from that enthusiasm to taking the decision to invest, there is still a step», he admitted in an interview with the newspaper La Nación. According to his analysis, the Regime of Incentives for Large Investments (RIGI) has functioned as a necessary exception to provide legal certainty, but he clarified that long-term investors, such as the mining and oil sectors, require certainties that go beyond the electoral horizon. Cornejo, as learned by the Argentine News Agency, emphasized that financial market confidence also reflects this transition phase: «Those that mature before 2027 offer a lot of money from investors. Certainty is needed». Finally, the governor stressed that in addition to government measures, the private sector must carry out its own reconversion towards the new paradigm. «The government has to face this situation with greater political strength, take care of its allies and work together so that the project is not frustrated, as Macri's was in 2018», he concluded.
